Laughter An Anxiety Fighter

Some of my darkest days, when I thought the walls of anxiety were closing in on me, I would pray for Christ to comfort me and then I would do a DBT Crisis Survival Skill- Laughter. In the beginning of my recovery I didn't have any friends to support me, much less help me laugh. I was still in the process of looking for safe new friends at that point. So instead I found 3 comedy sitcoms that no matter what anxiety filled mood I was experiencing, these shows provided a good laugh every time. I was going through grief when I left the Center many years ago and am going through grief and loss again which triggers my anxiety. Today I watched one of my favorite comedy shows that came out with new episodes. I laughed so much. In my grief journey I'll take any laughs I can get. I feel anyone who is returning home with anxiety go have a laugh, any way you positively can. Laughter released happy chemicals in my brain, was a good release of anxiety, and it calmed me. It worked in the begining of my recovery and it still helps now. Thankfully, I have slowly over time met a lot of friends in recovery who can help me laugh, but when they are busy in the exact moment I need to descalate my anxiety or stress, I can take care of myself and I do my DBT. I still watch comedy, read a funny blog, or listen to streaming comedy on Pandora or IHeartRadio. I think my stress/ anxiety levels would still be very elevated 24 hours a day, if I didn't utilize this DBT Crisis Survival skill. So release some stress and try laughter (bonus points because it counts as a dbt self soothing skill, one mindful, and taking a vacation from problems) :)

Thanks Laura, that's great advice. Sometimes it's the simple things that help the most. The free self help tools rather than looking further can be the most empowering. Laughter is always good !!

Why is it we always forget about laughter? So true how important it is but so difficult sometimes. Love the idea of streaming comedy, haven't thought of that. Definitely going to use that and recommend it!!

  • The most surprising thing about leaving the Center is that it takes a long long long time to heal. After almost 3 years it still seems like yesterday that I was there. I would encourage those leaving to stay in contact with those you have bonded with. Just the other day, I reached out to a friend from the center and we commiserated about all kinds of different things. It was great to have a connection with someone that knew me and could provide support. Keep those bonds active. Group texts or calls are an easy way to do this. But most importantly, know that the road doesn't end and the ups and downs go on for miles.
  • One thing I found really hard when I left the Centre and was continuing my recovery with therapists at home, was coping with just how raw and vulnerable I felt. Opening up deep childhood wounds left me feeling pretty much like a wounded child almost all the time. I felt so full of shame at allowing others to see just how weak I really felt inside, despite being a grown married woman with two children. Then one day I made a commitment to myself which really helped me a lot. I decided to commit myself to the needs of my wounded inner child over and above any feelings of shame and embarrassment I felt as the adult me. I committed to myself that I would do whatever it takes to heal my wounded inner child, even if it meant embarrassing the adult me. This was a huge step forward for me and opened up the door to going very deep into what my inner child really felt and needed from me in order to heal. Allowing others to see my vulnerability was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. Now, three years later and looking back I can say it was 100% worth it and I am SO glad I did. I now see the courage and strength in allowing others to see our vulnerabilities, which in the end leads us to feeling very empowered and strong. So yes, be brave and dig deep even though it is beyond painful - it is worth it in the end. The darkness leads to the light, it really does. Sending big love and healing xx
  • One thing I wish I knew earlier is that EACH and EVERY layer of uncovering what no longer works, and recovering our innate health which we are all born with, is TOTALLY necessary. I had many therapists who would put themselves forward saying they have the new and best methods to overcome addiction/anorexia/anxiety/trauma etc etc. They would then put down other modalities of therapy as superficial and not getting to the root cause. Over the past three years I have worked with many different modalities, including CBT, EFT, Psychotherapy, EMDR, Baud therapy, Hypnotherapy, Craniosacral therapy, Reflexology, Shiatsu, IFS (Integrated Family Systems), SE (Somatic Experiencing), 12 Step Programmes, Coaching, Naturopath, Women circles and more. Each time I started with a new therapist I felt they gave me false hope that I would need to look no further after working with them. What I can now see is that each step led to the next and each and every stage was 100% necessary. I often would wonder if I could have skipped a stage and jumped straight to the next one, but I now see that it takes EVERY layer to be looked at and integrated to create lasting change and I do not regret any of the therapy sessions I have had. I hope my message is clear - there is no one way out to recovery. It takes looking at ourselves from every angle and slowly but surely replacing the negative patterns of behaviour, thinking and feeling into positive life long healthy ones.
